Minnesota prisons are full. The inmate population is growing. And a proposal with bipartisan support can solve the problem.
A broad coalition of more than 50 counties, cities, school districts, organizations, and people of faith want Minnesota to lease a vacant 1,600-bed prison in Appleton, MN and operate it with State of Minnesota public employees – a solution known as the “Appleton Option.”
Families and small businesses in our region would see significant economic benefits if the Appleton prison is put back to use. As many as 350 good jobs with good benefits are at stake.
Our solution is a cost-effective, flexible option that ensures every inmate receives the rehabilitation services they need to safely re-enter their communities as productive citizens.
"It'd be great for the economy, great for the community, and it'd bring people back in. And it helps all the businesses."
